May is Stroke Awareness Month. It aims to raise awareness of the risk factors and symptoms of stroke and raise funds for stroke research.
F A C T #1:stroke kills brain cells. Stroke happens when a clot or rupture interrupts blood flow to the brain. Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells die.
F A C T #2: types of stroke: Ischemic caused by a clot, Hemorrhagic caused by a rupture and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or “warning stroke” caused by a temporary blockage.
F A C T #3: about one in four stroke survivors is at risk for another stroke. Fortunately, up to 80 percent of second clot-related strokes may be preventable.
F A C T #4: prevention is key. Had a stroke? Work with your doctor to identify the cause and create a plan to prevent another. This may include managing high blood pressure, making healthy lifestyle choices and taking medications as recommended by your doctor. After an ischemic stroke or TIA, most patients will be prescribed an antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy.
F A C T #5: time lost is brain lost
Now that you know prevention, here’s how you spot one. Learn the FAST warning signs:

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month. High blood pressure—or hypertension—is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. We monitor pregnant patients closely during and after their delivery for high blood pressure.

Also in the month of May, we celebrate two weeks of fun, with teachers’ and nurses’ appreciation weeks.

Nurse Appreciation Week, also known as National Nurses Week, is an annual celebration that takes place from May 6th to May 12th. It honors the contributions and sacrifices of nurses worldwide, recognizing their vital role in healthcare. The week commemorates the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

U.S. Teacher Appreciation Week runs from May 6 to May 10, 2024, and Teacher Appreciation Day is May 7, 2024. In 1953, Elenor Roosevelt said, “The teachers are, of course, among the most important people in our nation. Day in and day out they are at work preparing the future citizens of the U.S.  Next to parents they are the most important people in our communities.”

Thank a teacher and a nurse this week!

Have a thankful May! And of course, Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!
