Happy March!
This month, The Women’s Medical Center celebrates our patients – the women! March is Women’s History Month. This is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to U.S. history. This day serves “To recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.”

March is also Endometriosis Awareness Month. Endometriosis is a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows in other places in the body. It is one of the most common gynecological diseases, and its primary symptoms include pain and infertility. Endometriosis may affect more than 11% of American women between 15 and 44. It is especially common among women in their 30s and 40s and may make it harder to get pregnant. Talk to any of our wonderful physicians here at TWMC if you experience symptoms of endometriosis.

March 4 is HPV Awareness Day. HPV is the human papillomavirus. Almost all of us will have HPV at some point and while for most of us it isn’t harmful, HPV is linked to several kinds of cancer. Here at TWMC, we offer the HPV vaccine series to patients within the recommended age range.

Lastly, Trisomy Awareness Month is observed in March. It is a congenital disorder that occurs when there are three copies of a chromosome instead of the typical two. Down syndrome is one of the most well-known manifestations of trisomy, where chromosome 21 is copied. March is chosen as the Trisomy Awareness Month in the U.S. because it is the third month of the year, which correlates to the three copies of chromosomes that characterize the disorder. At TWMC, we offer the cell free DNA test in pregnancy (Qnatal), which can detect trisomies 13, 18, and 21, if present.
